Winter Palace
Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli was the architect of the Winder Palace. This outstanding artist began the construction of the palace by order of Elizaveta Petrovna, the daughter of Peter the Great. The construction lasted for 8 years from 1754 until 1762. Originally the Winter Palace was intended as the Czar’s residence. The Winter Palace is built in the Baroque architectural style which implies ornate luxury and pomp. The Palace is richly decorated with sculptures, vases, gorgeous Corinthian columns. Elizaveta Petrovna did not live to see the final stage of construction.
The Winter Palace was used according to its original intent, i.e. as a Czar’s residence up to 1917. The Winter Palace enjoys not only cultural but also historical significance because the lives of all czar families went by behind its walls.
